The racial makeup of the county was 74.39% White, 20.10% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 3.17% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. 1.83% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 18.4% were of German, 10.8% Irish, 7.3% English, 7.0% Italian, 6.1% United States or American and 5.4% Polish ancestry according to Census 2000. There were 299,877 households out of which 30.20% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.40% were married couples living together, 12.80% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.80% were non-families. 27.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.10% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.00. In the county the population was spread out with 23.60% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 23.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.60% who were 65 years of age or older. In the rear left you can see the old Academy of Music Theatre on Howard Street. The old school building was later used as Western High School when Western moved to a new campus, and after a fire, the building was converted into apartments. A look at the school a few years later. By 1927, the neighboring Academy of Music was torn down, and replaced with the Stanley Theatre. On the right, a 2006 shot shows that the name in stone still appears above the doorway. Baltimore City College ( 2 ) 33rd and The Alameda City College moved to the new campus on 33rd Street where it remains to this day. On the front of the building are some neat stone features, which can be seen on Kilduff's Stone Faces page. Just to the West of the school was Eastern High School, which as since closed is is now a part of the Johns Hopkins University.
